Third world travel has much to offer in the form of microscopic unfriendlies. Not all sanitation is western standard. So we eat peeled fruits, cooked vegetables, and guide you to the cleaner restaurants carefully selected through years of experience.

However, there can be no guarantee that you will avoid the intestinal test. We will have native herbs to offer and suggest you carry whatever form of medicines you put your faith in.

TRAVEL HEALTH:

I have searched hundreds of what I hope to be trustworthy medical web sites, usually those that aren’t just trying to sell you something, to provide the latest updates on common travel health challenges and treatments. Some of the common myths about who and how we get sick are debunked and the current most effective treatments are surveyed.

Common Colds and flu symptoms are common traveler ailments (usually brought from home and plane travel and succumbed to while traveling). Again, bring those medicines you put your faith in. There is no cure for the common cold. The most reliable and simplest treatment is a combination of fluids, plenty of rest, Vitamin C and a non-drip nasal gel containing Zincum Gluconicum to reduce the duration and distress of symptoms. Please see Travel Health - Common Colds.

Travelers' Diarrhea is generally self-limited and lasts 3-4 days even without treatment. The commonly available Amazon herb Dragon's Blood, Sangre de Drago, has been tested and found to be a particularly effective treatment for the intestinal test. Specific antibiotic treatment, plenty of fluids and Probiotics are also recommended by health researchers. Travelers' Diarrhea has been extensively researched and there is much information I have gathered. Please see Travel Health - Travelers' Diarrhea. BACK TO TOP

VACCINATIONS:

Generally no shots are required, although, some are suggested by health boards. Your local health department will have vaccine information, if this is something you choose. You can read up on vaccines for travel if you would like at: www.travmed.com and www.cdc.gov/travel. Sometimes people react to the vaccines. If you are going to get the shots it is better to do so some time before the journey. Even just one shot can cost more than US$200 so allow time to shop around if you do decide to have them.

Malaria prophylactics and yellow fever vaccination are recommended for the Amazon jungle near Manu. However many of our informed travelers choose not to use either due to the low incidence of these diseases where we travel.

Most of our journeys are in the cooler highlands, which are not overly disease prone. We are often with native healers and local herbs are available to effectively treat local diseases. Many travelers choose not to get inoculations. Information concerning the possible hazards of vaccines can be found at: www.whale.to/vaccines.html or www.thinktwice.com. BACK TO TOP

ALTITUDE ATTITUDE:

All of our journeys come to be over 10,000 feet above sea level. Most people do fine, perhaps moving kind of slow, but all right. The herb ginkgo bilboa has been tested and found to reduce altitude sickness. Take 100 milligrams twice a day, starting a few days before going to high altitudes. We will have available native Andean herbs that can help along with conventional medicines. Most of our journeys adjust by starting low, and moving slowly over several days to the highest places thus very few people are bothered much by the altitudes.

If you wish to read up on high altitude medicine check out www.high-altitude-medicine.com.

FITNESS:

Traveling the Andes means everywhere we go takes walking up and down. The elderly and infirm are able to make it, however slowly. In the knowing of holistic happiness, physical strength can add much to mental and spiritual growth. Get so that you can, in joy, walk uphill for two hours. If not, you can still work it out when you are there (not as much fun).

The journey called Titicaca Traditions is our most easy touring travel. Mostly we are moving about in vans to various temples. When in the ruins you can go as slow and stay as low as you may need without pushing yourself into hard climbing. If need be, consult with your physician and remember to bring along an adequate supply of any prescriptions and necessary medicines that you may need to take.
